Fragile
Series of sculptures, 2020
During our stay in an artist residence in Viborg, we discovered a tiny antique store with an eclectic collection of blue and white porcelain figurines: playing children, wild animals, mythological creatures... Delicate shiny objects appeared old fashioned and yet somehow they resonated with today’s unstable reality. For us, as artists, it suddenly seemed exciting to make these traditional collectibles into a starting point for our research. Our oversized replicas and fragments are made from lightweight materials, shiny epoxy-resin-finish adding to their “porcelain”-look. While working on the project, we have realised, that hardly any material is so determined by its contradictory properties as porcelain: fragile and stable, beautiful and kitschy, expensive and worthless, European and foreign...
Is porcelain perhaps a metaphor of the “perfect world” or is it just a beautiful facade that covers something up?
As with all our installations, the creative process has ultimately been completed in the exhibition space - Kunsthal Viborg, where we have incorporated packing materials, crates and palettes so that together with the sculptures they formed a unity with the space and created a new level of meaning.
